CONTEXT

On 20 December 2013, the Spanish Government announced that it would be making changes to the current law on abortion. These measures would have made it one of the most restrictive in the world; even prohibiting the termination of a pregnancy in cases where the foetus is malformed.

Worldwide media debated the measures the Spanish Government wished to take and denounced them as an abuse of power. Women in Spain took to the streets on a massive scale, but the Government paid them no attention.

IDEA

To show the consequences of the law reform, we created Abortion Travel, “the travel agency that should never exist.” A fictitious travel agency, both physical and online, for women wishing to have abortions outside Spain. A protest measure, an attempt to prevent the proposed changes denying Spanish women the freedom to decide.

BOARD

RESULTS

The travel agency was a hit on national and international media with earned media valued in 1 million euros, an audience of more than 40 million people, and 3 million impressions on Twitter.

On September 23th, 2014, Spanish Minister of Justice Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, who was the leading advocate of the reform, resigned as a consequence of its withdrawal.
